Sharma is a Hindu Brahmin surname. The Sanskrit stem ṣárman- (nom. sarma) can mean 'joyfulness', 'comfort', 'happiness'.[1][2] Sarma and Sarmah are alternative English spellings of the name, commonly used by Assamese Brahmins.[3]
Origin
[edit]According to the Bhavishya Purana, Sharma is the first Brahmin surname, which Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Vishnu, is said to have given to King Jaisen.[4]
